What is a baby spa?

A baby spa offers short, supervised warm-water sessions for infants — often called infant hydrotherapy or baby floating — usually followed by an infant massage. Sessions run 20 to 60 minutes, a parent is present throughout, and the water is warmer and shallower than a swimming pool.

What actually happens

Your baby is supported in a small tub of clean, body-temperature water, either by a therapist's hands or by a flotation device, and allowed to move freely. The session usually ends with a massage, and at most spas the therapist teaches you the strokes so you can repeat them at home.

The neck-float question

Some spas use a flotation ring that sits around the baby's neck. Health Canada and the U.S. FDA have both warned about neck floats used unsupervised, particularly for babies with low muscle tone or special needs. Reputable spas keep a therapist's hands on the baby throughout. Ask which method a spa uses and how close the therapist stays — it is a fair question and a good spa will answer it without defensiveness.

Is it covered by insurance?

Sometimes, and only partly. Where sessions are delivered by a Registered Massage Therapist, the massage portion is usually claimable on an extended health plan; hydrotherapy on its own generally is not. Several spas issue an RMT receipt for the massage and explicitly say the water portion isn't covered. We record what each business publishes, and leave it blank where they publish nothing.

What age can they start?

It varies more than you'd expect — from two weeks at some spas to four months at others, with the upper end running to twelve years for massage. The age range on each listing is the one that business publishes, not a general rule.
